A Church, Building…

A church is so much more than a facility, someplace people “go”. A church is the people, a family brought together by our beloved Creator, a body blended together with Jesus as our “head” and chief shepherd. Still, a facility provides a place of assembly, a rally-point, the equipping center from which the local mission is galvanized. We want ministry to pour from our hearts and our homes, but the church’s building is where we can assemble to praise our God, hear biblical preaching, see the continual growth in maturity and numbers as the Lord leads, and witness testimonies from those we may not know personally but are part of our community.

As mentioned before, we were blessed with a facility beyond our means in 2007, and are now raising funds to grow into the space. We needed to raise $300,000, and of the 310 households that call the Lake City Campus our our base of operations – our home away from home – 98 households have contributed toward making this a reality.

As of the end of June, strong>we’re almost 2/3 of the way there with $192,000. That’s encouraging, but also represents a need for a secondary push. Many households that leverage the campus for teaching, training, Children’s Ministry, and weekly worship have not contributed to this shared resource. If 1/3 has contributed 2/3, it’s the prayer of your elders that the remaining 2/3 would do their part.

However, it’s likely that some households are between jobs due to our recent economic situation, and others are new families who are only guests and uncertain if this is where Jesus is calling them to worship and participate in the work of the gospel. This means that, for those of us that have given, we need to reassess and see if July can afford us more means to dig cheerfully and sacrificially and give more than the first big blast.

If everyone who already gave went to the well again and gave half-again as much, we’d knock out the remaining third. Between those who’ve given and those who haven’t, we surely have the means to reach the goal God has put in front of us. Presently, the bank note is due July 25 so we’ve got just a few weeks to reach the milestone 300K we need to finish well.

We ask all members and committed congregants (as well as any who are inspired by the work of Mars Hill Church and feel led to contribute) to pray this weekend over payday and contribute cheerfully and sacrificially. For options on giving or to give online, click here.

God, Goth, and Glorious Juxtaposition

My wife and I started dating in a gothic dance club in downtown Seattle surrounded by low light and people cloaked in black. Parties were often candlelit, and black nail polish flowed freely. When we first came to Mars Hill Church, a Good Friday service felt like home, with an ambiance tilted toward the macabre [...]

Fears & Sin RE: Silence & Prayer

We recently received these reflections from a Mars Hill member, wife and mother and wanted to share them with you:
Last night I attended to the Lake City Campus‘ monthly Night of Prayer. I was humbled to realize how rarely I sit in silence. It’s a discipline I do not enjoy. I am an “activist”, [...]
