From Spirit to Sacrifice
Looking at John Looking at Jesus…
Many times Mary’s visit to her relative Elizabeth is clipped out of Christmas readings. The birth of the forerunner, John the Baptist, is omitted when in truth it creates an incredible link by which we can look at the fullness of God. In this message, we’re going to look at John’s interaction with God from Spirit to Sacrifice.
John’s intersections with Jesus provide views of God’s sovereignty, God’s election, Christ’s supremacy, Christ’s deity, and the promise of salvation. John interacts with God from womb to baptism and through doubt to decapitation, boldly proclaiming the gospel, admittedly having doubt in times of trial, but persevering to what the world would see as a bitter end. In Jesus, however, we see that John’s end is only the beginning of a life in Christ.
Are we known by God like John? Are we loved by God like John? Are we humbled by God like John? In a season where most of us enjoy decoration, we will look at how John faced decapitation and see what it truly means to follow Jesus. As we head into a year of uncertainty, we can learn a lot from this man who points unerringly to Jesus as the firm foundation in every circumstance.
