God of Deliverance, Peace and Patience…
When you look at the call of Gideon in the book of Judges, God’s story turns our stereotypical image of the hero on its head. Instead of a “mighty man of valor”, we find a timid man doubting God, surrounded by idolatry, and uncertain if he can really trust the Lord in light of what God is calling him to do. God exhibits great patience with Gideon that I must say far surpasses mine.
The Bible reveals God as the ONLY hero in the Bible, delivering Gideon from his enemies and cultivating a spirit of peace and trust with the patient hand of a shepherd. Instead of using this as an excuse to be like Gideon in chapter 6 of Judges, it should lovingly call us to a quick response in light of our loving Creator.
What idols and objects of devotion pollute your life and home and blind you to God’s presence and call? What sins or doubt linger, where proper fear and respect of God could bring peace in all these matters? Where are you testing God’s patience, and can we respond together as a people to answer his call in light of his grace, instead of abusing it? Let’s make fall a time where we chop down the idols, stop testing and bargaining with God, and respond to His commission for our lives.
