What do Children and Trash have in Common?
There are SO many ways to answer that question, but only one as it relates to Mars Hill Church and the Wedgwood Outdoor Movies coming up on July 12. Entertaining the kids and picking up after the event are two ways Mars Hill Church has decided to help participate with and love the community in July. Volunteers are needed to help with kids but most importantly staying to do the most humbling job of all: cleaning up while everybody else heads for home.
The Outdoor Cinema is a free event intended to provide local organizations, residents, and businesses a fun way of getting together to make Wedgwood an even better community. WCC’s Outdoor Cinema is generously hosted by Thornton Creek School, between NE 80th and NE 77th at 42nd Avenue NE. Last year, things kicked off with a visit from local firefighters, a piñata, face painting, water balloon tosses with grilled hot dogs, ice cream cones, and balloons abounding. Café Van Gogh and Starbucks turned out with drinks and free bottled water was offered. Candy and other giveaways are expected.
In previous years, Mars Hill Church has often rented a park and done a series of barbecues to bring its own community together. This year, our campus wanted to do things a little differently, pulling together with existing community staples to hang out with, and serve, those who don’t go to our church on Sunday. Although our mission statement declares we are a “city within the city” that doesn’t mean we are exclusive or segregated – it means we love the city and seek the health of the city as Scripture speaks in the Book of Jeremiah. I can’t think of any better way than to grab the job nobody wants and own it with joy.
Members and participants of Mars Hill are encouraged to sign up to be part of the cleanup crew July 12 – email Eric Stark to let us know you can help. The film will be over at about 11:30pm, which means we want enough able-bodied volunteers to knock this out by midnight! That way we can all get home – some of you might sleep in, but I know I’m preaching the next morning.
If you can help out with the Children’s Games earlier in the evening, email Eric.
