Local Food Bank sees Record Use, Levels Low

I was shoveling Biscuits and Gravy down my gullet at the Lake City Chamber of Commerce Community Chat meeting last week, filling my stomach as announcements were made.  The gravy train between my plate and lips froze when it was announced that the Lake City Food Bank was serving more people than ever and was dangerously low on foodstuffs.  It’s so easy in this culture to take for granted the blessing we have to feed and clothe ourselves.  Our congregation had a food drive in early ’08 for the Lake City Food Bank and one of our pastors has been working to set up regular volunteering opportunities for our congregants.  However, most of us have the ability to respond quickly to urgent needs, and donating food is a quick and needed response.

I was pleased to talk with Chamber Executive Director Diane Haugen last week and see that the Chamber of Commerce and North Helpline are endeavoring not only to provide food, but also education so that those capable of working receive help on how to apply and interview for employment and transition to a place where they can provide for their families.  These efforts show wisdom and forethought in the way the city is seeking to serve the community.

Giving to the food bank is such a simple way to help and love the community.  Based on lip service, from the coffee shops to local blogs, one would think Seattle was a charitable city that loved others and was indelibly marked by charity.  However, a recent study showed that Seattle is near the bottom of the list of charitable cities.  For all the talk, where is the walk?  It is my hope that members of Mars Hill Church can be trendsetters in our communities when it comes to contributions like this… not so that we will be seen, but so that our love for Jesus simply pours out in tangible ways as scripture instructs.  We trust God will use simple and even anonymous acts to reveal Himself to people and transform lives.

For more information, check out the North Helpline Website.  Non-perishable food is needed as well as Baby Supplies and Hygiene Kits.  Additionally, there are volunteer opportunities.

A Church, Building…

A church is so much more than a facility, someplace people “go”. A church is the people, a family brought together by our beloved Creator, a body blended together with Jesus as our “head” and chief shepherd. Still, a facility provides a place of assembly, a rally-point, the equipping center from which the local mission [...]
