Juno What We’re Watching This Friday…

“Yeah, I’m a legend. You know, they call me the cautionary whale.“

Winning the Oscar for Best Screenplay written directly for the screen, Diablo Cody made quite an impression with her first screenplay Juno, directed by Jason Reitman and starring Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman. We’ll be watching the film Friday June 13 at 7pm, and delivering an exploration of its narrative themes. All are welcome to join us for the evening. The film is rated PG-13.

Faced with an unplanned pregnancy, a young woman makes an unusual decision regarding her unborn child. While it doesn’t sound like the recipe for a comedy, Cody’s story gives birth to some interesting ideas about relationships, cynicism, modern life, parenting and teenage pregnancy.

“You should’ve gone to China, you know, ’cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those t-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events.”

Cinema is a modern day pulpit; people flock to their local multiplexes, group together, and find themselves moved by a worldview revealed in story form, allowing themselves to be emotionally led by directors and screenwriters who influence how we feel, think, and even act. Cinemagogue features monthly film viewings at the MHC | Wedgwood Campus, followed by an expository exploration of narrative themes and spiritual parallels. A Church, Building…

A church is so much more than a facility, someplace people “go”. A church is the people, a family brought together by our beloved Creator, a body blended together with Jesus as our “head” and chief shepherd. Still, a facility provides a place of assembly, a rally-point, the equipping center from which the local mission [...]
