Wedgwood Videology and Holes in the Wall

A skeleton hangs from a taut metal cable, suspended ominously over the stage in the auditorium of the soon-to-open Wedgwood Campus (Sunday October 7, 10.30am and 5.00pm). No, this doesn’t mean we’re decorating for Halloween; the skeleton in question is not made of bone, but sharp black metal – the frame for the projection screen being installed to illuminate not only song lyrics and aesthetic, but to link all our church campuses by the same sermon broadcast via satellite.

With staff and volunteers working day and night to get the campus up and running, it’s easy to forget that some people don’t even know why we run the services the way we do, leveraging technology to present unified teaching at various locations to present the gospel to as many people as possible. One middle-aged neighbor came by and was very confused when it was explained how the church utilized video; however, at the Shoreline Campus some weeks ago, a humble octogenarian admitted that after a few minutes, she didn’t even consider the fact that the preaching pastor was on a screen and not live. A few young men with iPhones who telecommute weren’t sure they’d like a Sunday service that employed so much video. It’s clear that the curiosity or concern cannot be relegated to “old folks” or “people who aren’t hip”. Instead of stereotyping an age group or people group, this is something that it would be beneficial to help everyone understand.

Pastor Mark Driscoll put together a presentation for those curious or confused about this worship format that Mars Hill Church employs for Jesus’ mission. Check out the “Videology” message on our website (not to be confused with Vibeology, mind you – Paula Abdul may go out of style, but the gospel never does).

Even downstairs, where the Children’s Ministry is cutting large sections out of the walls for safety windows, video projectors replace old felt boards and archaic ways of doing “Sunday School”. Talking with Children’s Ministry Deacon Eric Stark and touring the facilities that will open in just a couple days, I almost wished I could be a kid again.

While starting strong, Eric is still looking for members to volunteer at both 10.30am and 5.00pm services. To help with this important part of Sunday, email WW Children’s Ministry.

To get a sneak peak and put in some needed service, the building will be open most of Saturday as early as 8.00am until late evening.

See you there… or see you Sunday.
